The Bridge: a searing drama

The Bridge concluded last Saturday on BBC Four.  If you like dark, well-acted drama and missed it, see it.

The genre, Nordic or Scandinavian noir, is now well established. The Bridge doesn't quite have a femme fatale but it adheres to many elements of its forebears: Hollywood film noir. The powerful misuse their  authority. There is lust, love, revenge and murder.

The series has a political and social aspect to it as well. Those on the Left will see it as an indictment of what is wrong with society. They will argue that the series highlights social injustice. The Right will argue that what The Bridge does is show how the social democratic Scandinavian experiment has failed.

The writers never made judgements. They showed you a world and placed a madman in it. Ultimately, all his posturing came down to a revenge tragedy.
